Derek Traeger was born and raised in San Pedro where he learned to swim and surf. He was a LA County Junior life guard for 9 years, a Cadet for 2 years, and is currently a Los Angeles City Life Guard. He swam for San Pedro High School and was captain of the San Pedro High surf team. He has been a swim instructor since 2011. He is a student at California State University Long Beach.
